Searching the Library Catalog for children's literature and locating it in Pius Library

Guide Type: Subject (but also useful for EDI 2000)
Purpose:     Locate children's books in Pius Library and find resources about children's books, authors, and illustrators.

Aid to Locating Children's Books in Pius Library

Children's literature books are located in at least 5 areas in Pius Library.

  • Currirulum Collection on the Lower Level at PZ 7 (fiction), PZ 8 (fairy tales), PZ 8 (some poetry), PS 35** (some poetry)
  • Level 4 East at PZ 7 (fiction), PZ 8 (fairy tales), PZ 8 (some poetry)
  • Level 4 East at PS 35** (some poetry)
  • Level 5 East at Oversize PZ 7 (fiction), PZ 8 (fairy tales), possibly PS 35**
  • Children's non-fiction books can be located in the Curriculum Collection, in Pius Library's general collection, and in the Oversize section at the call numbers associated with their subjects.

Locating Children's Literature

Locating Fairy Tales, Fables, or Nursery Rhymes

  • Search the SLU Library Catalog for a "known title" such as Cinderella or Humpty Dumpty or search for fairy talesfables, or nursery rhymes as a subject heading.
  • Next check format for that title, online or print.
  • If the format is online, click on the link provided in the Library Catalog.
  • If the format is print, note the call number for your title. Go to that area in the Library to locate additional titles.
  • Notice that Fairy Tales, Fables, and Nursery Rhymes usually have
    a Call number of PZ 8

Locating children's poetry

  • Subject heading for children's poetry is Juvenile Poetry
  • Search the Library Catalog by Keyword for Juvenile Poetry and a topic or author such as catsfear,friendship, or Maya Angelou.

Locating juvenile fiction

  • Subject heading is Juvenile Fiction.
  • Search the Library Catalog by Keyword for Juvenile Fiction and a topic of your choice such as flamingoshuman-animal relationshipscolors, or bullying.
  • Juvenile Fiction books will generally be located at PZ 7.

Locating juvenile literature on a subject

  • Subject heading is Juvenile Literature, which is given primarily to children's non-fiction books.
  • Search the Library Catalog by Keyword for Juvenile Literature and a subject of your choice such as railroadsweather, or fear.
  • Call numbers for non-fiction books will be at the call number for that subject - Example below:  Locomotive is Mechanical Engineering & Machinery, which is TJ.
