HIST 1000 - History Matters (Dr. Gilbert)

In-Class Exercise

Using SLU's library resources and the search techniques we went over in class, search for a secondary source related to a historical topic of your choosing. Paste the citation for that source in the top box and then answer the questions about what kind of source it is, how you found it, and how you could access it.

Source 1: ____________________________________________________

  1. What kind of source is it? (book, journal article, chapter in a book, etc)
  2. Where did you search for this source?
  3. How can you access this source? (online, print copy in stacks, ILL)

Brainstorming Topics

Brainstorm some keywords related to Martin Guerre and his time and place in history.

  • What time period did the events of Martin Guerre take place?
  • Where in the world did these events unfold?
  • Who were Martin Guerre and his wife? What was their station in life? How did they support themselves?
  • What other sectors or institutions feature in their story?
  • What other events were happening in the world around this time?
  • What technologies influenced the notoriety of these events and the availability/variety of primary sources that Davis used in her research?

Homework Exercise

Using the search techniques we went over in class ('Secondary Sources' tab), search SLU's library resources to find a secondary source that relates to Martin Guerre. The source should be something that helps you understand the historical context of the events of Martin Guerre's return. Once you've found a source, paste the citation for that source in the top box and then answer the questions about what kind of source it is, how you found it, and how you accessed it. Then, answer the other worksheet questions that will guide you through evaluating that source for reliability & credibility using the concepts from class ('Evaluating Source' tab). Don't forget to bring the source you find with you to class on Monday!
