  • All References is a permanent group, containing all of the references in the Library.
  • Imported References is a temporary group containing only the most recently imported references.  The references are overwritten as new references are imported and emptied upon closing the Library.
  • Trash is a temporary group containing only the deleted references and is emptied upon closing the Library.
  • Custom Groups are groups created to hold references on a specific topic.  References must be manually added.
    • To create a custom group, go to Groups on the top bar and select Create Group.
    • Name the group when prompted.
    • Highlight references in the Reference Pane that you want to add to a custom group.
    • Drag and drop those references in the custom group.
  • Smart Groups are used to store references matching a particular search strategy.  When any references are added to the Library that match the criteria of the Smart Group, they are automatically added to the appropriate Smart Group.

    • Enter your search terms.
    • Name the group so you can remember what you are saving.
  • Online Search Groups contain the results of the most recent search done through EndNote for each database listed.

References Pane displays all of the references in a highlight group or the references just imported from a search.

Tabs Pane displays either a preview of the highlighted reference in the Reference Pane, or search criteria for searching from within EndNote.
