EndNote Tips

A basic guide for installing, navigating and using EndNote X5, EndNote X6, and EndNote X7. Note: If you share EndNote online folders with colleagues, sharing can be done on EndNote online as usual.

                        EndNote X4 Panes Description

Groups Pane - displays all of the various groupings of references available.  There are several types of groups, some permanent, some temporary. and some user created.

  • Permanent Groups
    • All References contains all of the references in the Library.
    • Unfiled contains all of the references that are not assigned to a group.
    • Trash contains deleted references that have not yet been permanently deleted.
  • Temporary Groups include
    • Search Results from an internal search of all references in your Library and
    • Imported References that appears after you import some references from a database search.
  • User Created
    • Group Sets by subject under My Groups above can contain both Custom Groups and Smart Groups.
             (To create a Group Set, go to Groups-->Create Group Set and give it a name.)
    • Custom Groups are groups created to hold references on a specific topic.  References must be manually added.
         
      • To create a custom group, go to Groups on the top bar and select Create Group.
      • Name the group when prompted.
      • Highlight references in the Reference Pane that you want to add to a custom group.
      • Drag and drop those references in the custom group.
    • Smart Groups are used to store references matching a particular search strategy.  When any references are added to the Library that match the criteria of the Smart Group, they are automatically added to the appropriate Smart Group.

      • To create a Smart Group, go to Groups on the top bar and select Create Smart Group.
      • Enter your search terms.
      • Name the group so you can remember what you are saving.
    • Combination Groups (new to X4) can be created from Groups, Smart Groups, and Custom Groups, but not Group Sets.
           
      • To create a Combination Group, go to Groups on the top bar and select Create from Groups.
      • When the "Create from Groups" dialog box appears, type a name for this Combination Group.
      • Under "Include References" heading, select up to 10 Groups, Smart Groups, and/or Custom Groups to use as search criteria.
      • Be sure to set the operators, AND, OR, NOT to combine the groups you want.  The OR operator is most useful for combining groups.

  • Online Search Groups contain the results of the most recent search done through EndNote for each database listed.

References Pane displays all of the references in a highlight group or the references just imported from a search.

Tabs Pane displays 1) A Preview of the highlighted reference in the Reference Pane; 2) Search criteria for searching from within EndNote, or 3) Quick Edit tab where you can quickly change or add information to the highlighted reference.
