Trademark Law Research

An introduction to researching trademark law.

Trademark Searching

Before you or your client submits an application for trademark registration - or invests time and money in a potential new mark - you will likely search federal, state, common law, or international trademarks to determine whether a similar mark is already being used.  This guide presents free search options and databases available to the SLU Law community.  It is important to understand the limitations of searching these trademark databases.  More robust subscription search services should be considered for the most complete search.

Trademark Official Gazette

Every Tuesday, the USPTO publishes marks eligible for registration in the Official Gazette.  This gives trademark owners the opportunity to challenge potential registrations.  Cancelled and renewed registrations are also listed.
