This guide includes information about working at the SLU Libraries & Museums, including information about current position openings, links to information sessions, and other information about working at SLU.

There are so many places to love in St. Louis! The places below just happen to be places current ULM employees love and have experience living in. If you're interviewing for a job with us and considering moving here, ask us for more info, and definitely talk to a realtor about all the things that are important to you. We hope our descriptions of the places we live in will help you imagine yourself living here as well!

Missouri

Chesterfield, St. Louis County
Chesterfield is a lovely place to live. As a suburb of St. Louis, it is especially oriented towards families, but there have been many luxury apartment complexes added in recent years that cater towards the young and single crowd. Everything in Chesterfield is easy. You’re never more than a short drive away from any modern convenience that you could want: grocery stores, pharmacies, home improvement stores, bookstores, etc. It also features many wonderful restaurants, especially some very authentic and delicious Indian food. It’s full of beautiful homes and large, old trees that make it a pleasure to drive or walk around the neighborhoods. The public schools are highly ranked and well regarded. And Chesterfield is growing. There are many ongoing developments, especially further west, and there are plans to turn the old Chesterfield Mall - where currently you can play indoor pickle ball and badminton - into a walkable “downtown” area with a mix of living and commercial spaces. Much of Chesterfield is conveniently located off of Highway 40/64, which is a direct route to SLU’s north campus.

City of Des Peres, St. Louis County
Des Peres is a vibrant city about 8 miles west of the City of St. Louis. It has a small-town feel, and offers residents numerous parks, local restaurants, boutiques, and West County Mall. Des Peres Park has several amenities for outdoor activities such as walking trails, playgrounds, tennis and pickleball courts, soccer and baseball fields, and a small lake for fishing, and observing wildlife including egrets, quail, ducks, geese, and turtles. Indoor recreation is available to residents through membership at The Lodge in Des Peres. The city sponsors many events throughout the year including a Summer Concert Series, Monster Machine Day, Des Peres Park Campout and more. I really enjoy the suburban living in Des Peres and love the convenience of having everything nearby, while at the same time having easy access to St. Louis cultural attractions, historical sites, and food scene.

Harvester, St. Charles County
I have lived in Harvester in St. Charles County since early 2023 and I really love it. It is close enough to St. Louis that it is easy to take advantage of the big city cultural institutions like the zoo and the museums, but also has easy access to suburban amenities. In addition, there are lots of boutique shops, restaurants, and festivals on Main Street in nearby St. Charles. St. Charles was the first capital of Missouri and Main Street preserves a lot of that architectural and historical heritage. For nature lovers and bikers there is easy access to the Katy Trail, Centennial Greenway, Weldon Springs Conservation Area, August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area, among many other parks and trails. For stargazers there is also nearby Broemmelsiek Astronomy Site. The commute to SLU's north campus is about 30-50 minutes on state and interstate highways, but is a pleasant drive. I love living in a suburban area with easy access to nature and relative proximity to the city.

Kirkwood, St. Louis County
Kirkwood is a very special neighborhood in the county of St. Louis. It’s one of the city’s historic suburbs, established in 1853, and features an adorable and very walkable downtown shopping district. There you will find the amazing local public library, a very lively farmer’s market (which features seasonal entertainment), a train station, the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center, and lots of fun shops and yummy restaurants. The neighborhood is known locally for the quality of its public school district, which has been drawing families to the area and increasing house values for many years. I grew up there and had a wonderful experience! The town also hosts many festivals including one of the city’s best fireworks displays and the fall Greentree Festival. For commuting, Kirkwood is conveniently located between the city’s two East-West highways and is about a 20-minute drive via highway from SLU’s north and south campuses.

LaSalle Park, St. Louis City
If you are interested in being close to everything but also in a quiet neighborhood, consider LaSalle Park. Located next to Soulard and Lafayette Square, LaSalle Park provides easy access to restaurants, parks, Downtown St. Louis, and SLU. The homes are a great mix of historic styles with new homes complimenting existing architecture. The neighborhood association is active, scheduling events throughout the year. The neighborhood is incredibly diverse and within easy walking distance to the historic Soulard Farmers Market, the oldest public market in the United States west of the Mississippi River. It is also within easy walking distance to a number of great restaurants. If you enjoy wine, the 33 Wine Bar is Lafayette Square is an easy 10-minute walk. It is also only one mile for Busch Stadium, home of the St. Louis Cardinals. Enjoy a view of the Gateway Arch and all St. Louis has to offer in LaSalle Park.

Shaw, St. Louis City
A certified historic district, the Shaw neighborhood dates back to the late 1800s when it was developed as an early St. Louis suburb. I’ve lived in Shaw since 2012 and I love it. It has a very residential feel but is also very walkable. There are multiple restaurants, coffee shops, bars, small shops, and even a vegan bakery! Walk to Tower Grove Park which holds events like a weekly farmers market, Food Truck Fridays, Festival of Nations and has amenities like tennis, pickleball, basketball, walking and running trails and playgrounds. The Missouri Botanical Gardens is also within walking distance and is worth visiting all year round. The neighborhood also has amenities like a dog park, community garden, and hosts the Shaw Art Fair each October. There is a daycare, and great options for both public and private schools in or near the neighborhood. To top it off, it’s only a 10-minute drive to SLU’s north campus and even closer to south campus!

Tower Grove East, St. Louis City

Tower Grove East is a leafy green neighborhood of moderate-sized single-family houses situated on the east side of Tower Grove Park, a beautiful 289-acre arboretum ideal for walking, biking, and running. It also borders the east side of the South Grand Business District, a vibrant area of restaurants and businesses along South Grand Boulevard. The neighborhood is quiet and historic, and it boasts an active community garden and even community orchard! Yet, it also gives immediate access to a wide variety of urban amenities. It is a short walk to the Tower Grove Famers’ Market, a colorful outdoor market held every Saturday morning (in season), with live music! It is home to the International Institute and nearby to Jay International Grocery, one of the city's best international markets. It is close to SLU, and a short drive to downtown St. Louis or to Grand Center, St. Louis’s performing arts district with the St. Louis Symphony, Jazz St. Louis, and the Fox Theatre.

Illinois

O’Fallon, St. Clair County, Illinois
Looking to live in the St. Louis Metro East area? O’Fallon is located less than 20 miles from St. Louis and 5 miles from Scott Air Force Base in Shiloh, IL with easy access to both Interstate 64 and U. S. Route 50. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad put O’Fallon on the map in 1854. Since then, it has continually grown to over 32,000 residents and has become one of the most popular Metro East cities to live. The O’Fallon Downtown District has many charming shops, restaurants and a farmer’s market with a variety of events throughout the year. Living near the Family Sports Park, you are bound to hear the crack of the bat in baseball and softball seasons or hear the joyous roar of sports fans anytime of the year. The combination of farms and suburbs helps O’Fallon maintain its small-town charm while continually growing. Additionally, the convenience of the highways for commuting or just visiting St. Louis makes living in O’Fallon wonderful.
